The Labour leader set out his vision for Britain in a bid to convince the country he should be the next Prime Minister. But his big housing plans will be hard to sell in parts of Greater Manchester
Excitement was building as Keir Starmer's big moment approached. Long queues started to form outside the main hall of Liverpool's Exhibition Centre well over an hour before the Labour leader's speech was set to start.
The party has changed beyond recognition in recent years. In contrast to conferences under Jeremy Corbyn's regime, this annual event has not been dominated by controversies, factional fights and allegations of anti-semitism. The Labour leader warned of a 'hard road' ahead, telling conference attendees that there is 'no magic wand' to fix the problems plaguing the UK. But he set out a long-term vision for the country, driven by economic growth.
But his flagship policy will be the hardest to sell to voters in some key battlegrounds - including in Greater Manchester. He promised to 'bulldoze' through the 'restrictive' planning system and build 1.5m new homes. Rather than radically rewriting planning laws, Labour wants to tilt the balance in favour of development with local communities living nearby having a say in how, not if housing is built. Labour will 'unleash the big build', he declared.
But in some key election battlegrounds which Labour will need to win if it wants to form a government, the 'big build' might not be a vote winner. By backing the 'builders' and not the 'blockers', Labour is making a political bet.
