Themes of Black Lives Matter, religion, history and more coalesce in famed painter’s powerful new collection at the de Young Museum in S.F.
Kehinde Wiley’s painting “Femme piquée par un serpent ” is on display at San Francisco’s de Young Museum as part of his “Archaeology of Silence” exhibition.Kehinde Wiley’s paintings and sculptures at San Francisco’s de Young Museum are “a direct response to the murder of George Floyd,” he explains.
“As we see George Floyd slain in the streets of America,” Wiley continues, “I start thinking about not just this explosive moment that triggers the whole world into thinking about Black bodies in a different way, but I start thinking about imaging of bodies slain, historically. I start digging into pictures of the fallen Christ.”
The museum describes the exhibit as a meditation “on the deaths of young Black people slain all over the world.” Wiley takes it further: “There’s so many opportunities now to talk about lost potential as a means to create a scaffolding for a better future.” During a press tour of the exhibit, Wiley talked about “creating a kind of religious feeling in a museum,” with the light almost “fetishized.” The paintings and sculptures were conceived as “images of the fallen,” Wiley said. But the museum texts, with input from community groups, made sure they were called “victims and survivors,” not just victims.
Wiley’s bronze sculpture “Dying Gaul” is inspired by a Roman marble from about 220 B.C., transformed into a young Black man. As Jackson suggests, it leads viewers “to imagine what moment he may be confronting with courage and fortitude.”
