The Kansas City Current signed star free-agent midfielder Debinha to a multiyear contract, the team announced Monday. Debinha, 31, was an MVP finalist for her performance with the North Carolina Courage last season, her sixth in the NWSL.
Debinha is a statement signing for Kansas City, but this is also a major win for the NWSL as a league and for the first year of free agency under the new collective bargaining agreement with the NWSL Players Association. A top player had freedom of movement and elected to stay. They might not always fall this way for the NWSL moving forward, but Monday’s news provides a case study that NWSL clubs can use to retain talent — as long as they’re willing to dig into those pockets.
Angie and Chris Long said in a statement: “Debinha is one of the most talented, accomplished, and well-known players in the world. Her name is synonymous with excellence. We can’t wait for Kansas City to have the special opportunity to watch Debinha play and cheer her on.”
