Hobbs' unannounced trip was for a formal signing ceremony of a partnership announced in October between the Arizona guard and the military in Oman.
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs is visiting the Middle East to formalize a partnership between the military in Oman and the Arizona National Guard, a taxpayer-funded trip first publicized by an English language news site in the sultanate a hemisphere away.
In a statement Sunday, Hobbs expressed gratitude to Omani leaders for the partnership, which"is grounded in our Arizona National Guard military relationship but expands to other sectors of the government bringing valuable interoperability opportunities for both countries.” Early Monday Arizona time, Hobbs and Omani leaders attended an official signing ceremony for the partnership and were set to visit the American International School, a K-12 school for American expatriates. On Tuesday, the governor was scheduled for"ministerial meetings" and"cultural touring" before returning to the Grand Canyon State on Wednesday.
Arizona National Guard Maj. Gen. Kerry Muehlenbeck signed the formal agreement, according to the Times of Oman, which. Hobbs, as commander in chief of the Arizona National Guard, and Gen. Daniel R. Hokanson, chief of the U.S. National Guard Bureau, spoke at the event.
