It resulted in England manager Gareth Southgate launching a passionate defence of the centre-back, describing the ongoing criticism of the former Leicester City ace as a "joke".
"He is a really good friend of mine, he is a great guy and a really hard-working professional. From an England point of view, being one of our best defenders in recent times, I would go as far as to say that he has been one of the best defenders in the history of our country in an England shirt. "There is always going to be noise around players and the important thing is that we have a really strong core within our team with England. That is the most important thing going into big games and big tournaments."
