We chat with TheSerpentQueen creator Justin Haythe & executive producer Erwin Stoff about what made them want to tell Catherine de Medici's story and how they brought 16th-century France to life for the STARZ series:
Catherine de Medici was known for her ruthless politicking and her vast influence over the French court and The Serpent Queen aims to explore that in a biting fashion. Samantha Morton stars as the titular monarch, an Italian noblewoman who reigned as Queen of France from 1547 to 1559 due to her marriage to King Henry II. Her time on the throne was not without its complications, earning her the eponymous title.
Going back to 16th-century France and bringing all of that to life, how much of an undertaking was that? Did you guys face any particular challenges when crafting the period, so to speak? Justin, you made your directorial debut with episodes six and eight. So what was that like? Were there any challenges that came up that you didn't expect?
