Robert Suarez journeyed from Venezuela to Mexico to Japan before emerging as a 31-year-old rookie with a 101 mph fastball in the Padres' bullpen
In the summer of 2015, word began to spread among Padres scouts of a late-blooming Venezuelan humping a heater up to 98 mph in the Mexican League.He’d never been signed by a big-league team, so he was raw. But he was already 24 years old and could move quickly.One problem: Competition in Japan had driven the price tag up to 50 million yen or nearly $350,000 — well above what the Padres paid minor leaguers.
Nor was he about to give up baseball, although he admitted the sport had become more of a “hobby” as he worked odds-and-ends jobs in and around his native Caracas. So Suarez spent a year scraping together his earnings to give pitching one last real go with Cañonez in Mexico. He bounced between Japan’s minor leagues and top circuit. He got a look as a starting pitcher. He had Tommy John surgery. As his trajectory began to finally point upward, more offers from the States arrived.“I felt it was the best path as far as the opportunities that were presented to me,” Suarez said, “as far as being in the minor leagues and service time and arbitration and how all those things go. That’s why I decided to stay a bit longer before coming to the U.S.
“Gosh darn that’s an explosive arm,” Niebla said. “I mean it’s exciting, him throwing as hard as he does and the two-seamer was real and just as hard.”
