We chat with FiveDaysAtMemorial star julieannemery about her experience working on AppleTVPlus' new series, which explores the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina:
Julie Ann Emery stars as Diane Robichaux in Five Days At Memorial, a new AppleTV+ show from Carlton Cuse and John Ridley. Robichaux is just one of the employees who work in the same building as the titular hospital after Hurricane Katrina devastates the city of New Orleans.
Julie Ann Emery: Personally, it was a great joy, because we're telling a story that matters. And this was the most wildly talented yet kind and generous of spirit group and environment I have ever been in or been part of. I have a lot of love for that with the cast, so much love for each other.
Julie Ann Emery: Matthew Davies is our production designer, and he did such a meticulous, brilliant job of recreating the hospital that when Sheri Fink, the journalist who wrote the book and the Pulitzer Prize-winning article, she came to set [and] she said, "My God, this is like being there.
There are so many interesting parallels in terms of the government's response to the pandemic, climate change, and things like that. I know that was on people's minds but was that a common topic, talked about onset? I feel very lucky to have had her on this. And she cares so completely about this story and our read our response to it as a society. Julie Ann Emery: I think the best I would say is that the show is a dramatization of Sherry's book, which has its advantages. You can really get into the emotional and psychological aspects of it far better than a documentary probably could, especially an after-the-fact documentary. I am playing a dramatization of of Diane Robichaux.
