If two of Julia Garner's characters, Ozark's Ruth & InventingAnna's Anna Delvey, ever met, she thinks they'd end up best friends 🤔 'They both like activating people – that’s what they have in common.'
Julia Garner believes that Anna Delvey, the subject of Inventing Anna, would be best friends with Ruth Langmore from Ozark. Garner is an American actor on the rise who landed her breakthrough role as Ozark's Langmore in 2017 and has played the character since. Recently, she also starred in Inventing Anna in the lead role of Delvey, a real-life scammer who was convicted of swindling over $200,000 from New York societal elites.
In Ozark, Langmore is a 19-year-old woman who grew up poor in the Ozarks within a family of criminals. She is smart, ambitious, and has the makings of a criminal mastermind who seeks money and power. Meanwhile, Delvey is a 25-year-old woman who poses as a German heiress to scam New York socialites into giving her money.
I think Ruth and Anna would judge each other in the beginning because they’re from completely different worlds. They would start out not really liking each other but by the end of it maybe they’d be best friends. They both like activating people – that’s what they have in common. Garner certainly makes some interesting points about Delvey and Langmore. On the one hand, they aren't the type to open up to someone quickly and would likely be wary of each other at first. However, both of them share that knack for manipulation and the ability to energize others, whether in a positive or negative way. Both of them strive for money, power, and influence, though for differing reasons.
Garner's discussion on Delvey and Langmore's hypothetical friendship shows the grasp that she has on her characters. In preparation for her role as Delvey, she actually visited her real-life counterpart in prison several times to truly understand her character. Garner noted that this led her to noticing how Delvey could switch easily between a light and dark personality. It is, perhaps, this darker characteristic in Delvey that might mesh better with Langmore's intensity.
