Joel Matip’s 96th minute own goal gave Spurs a 2-1 win against Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday but the victory was marred with controversy.Diaz’s opening goal was ruled out for offside by the on-pitch officials and VAR failed to intervene to reverse the decision, despite replays clearly showing the goal was onside. It was later ruled that the VAR officials incorrectly adjudged that the referee had awarded the goal, and therefore did not see fit to ‘intervene’.
The nature of the defeat left Jurgen Klopp furious and Liverpool released a statement on Sunday night promising to ‘examine’ their options following an apology from PGMOL. But Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, has taken the anger a step further, claiming the defeat was a ‘rigged game’ and branding the officials ‘clowns’.
