Franco gets his moment in Land of Rising Sun

Joshua Franco has had to sit idly by and watch as his younger brother became a breakout star in 2022.
Franco, the reigning WBA 115-pound super flyweight champion, ends a 16-month layoff by taking on WBO champ Ioka in a 12-round unification bout Saturday at Ota-City General Gymnasium. But the fight fell through and Estrada vacated his version of the WBA crown to take on Nicaraguan legend Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez for a third time.
Franco’s last fight was a stirring, one-sided decision win over Australia’s Andrew Maloney on Aug. 16, 2021, in Tulsa, Okla., ending their 14-month long trilogy that saw Franco go 2-0 with one no-contest. At 33, Ioka is a four-division champion who is attempting to become a unified champion for the second time. This will be his 22nd world championship fight.
Fighting on New Year’s Eve is something of a tradition in Japan, and especially for Ioka. This will be his 11th fight on Dec. 31. He is 9-1 on that date.
