For Jon Batiste, the months of lockdown and virtual work during the pandemic have been one of the most creative times in his life.Jon Batiste has had one hell of a pandemic. Sure, the jazz pianist and bandleader of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” turned pop sensation lost more work than he can recall. But he was able to turn the months of lockdown and virtual work into one of the most creative times in his life.
Along the way, Mr. Batiste, 35, maintained his gig on “The Late Show,” which he has now had for over six years, completed a musical, and wrote both a symphony and the score for Pixar’s “Soul,” for which he won an Oscar.
