Manchester City defender John Stones was only fit enough for the bench against Arsenal but has joined up with England.
John Stones would not be fit to face Arsenal despite returning to training at the beginning of that week and being on the bench against RB Leipzig. "Maybe for the national team, but not for us," he added.
Of course, Stones knows his body better than anyone. It was he who felt something in a muscle in training before the opening Premier League game at Burnley that alerted medical staff that he had an issue. Kevin De Bruyne, out until the New Year after an injury picked up in the opening 25 minutes of the first league game, and third choice keeper Scott Carson are the only players to have been used less than Stones by Guardiola this season. A look back at the last campaign shows that he wasn't in the top ten most used then either.
However, as much as luck features in staying fit it is also a skill - just look at the effort that goes into making sure Erling Haaland can start every game he wants to. Stones knows this from his time at City, but also knows how tricky it can be to get the right balance.
