President Joe Biden speaks at the Shipyards in Lorain, February 17, 2022LORAIN, Ohio -- Drawing on the words of famed author and Lorain-native Toni Morrison, President Joe Biden on Thursday said cities like Lorain and the rest of Ohio have much to look forward to in the future while announcing $1 billion in funding for restoration of the Great Lakes.
“They are homes to countless natural wonders that should be conserved for all to enjoy, today, tomorrow, for all generations to come,” Biden continued. In his opening remarks, Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley said Biden provided them with a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for investment in the area. The Great Lakes funding is part of the infrastructure package ushered through Congress by Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican, who was one of the few members of the GOP in the state to praise the spending. Both Portman and Rocky River Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, the only Ohio Republicans who voted for the infrastructure package, praised the funding.
Biden used the brief visit -- cut short by the ongoing tension in Europe between Russia and Ukraine -- to bolster the broader aspects of the overall infrastructure package and the recent announcement that Intel plans to build a massive semiconductor factory outside Columbus, noting Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger. The factory, Biden said, was part of an overarching plan to re-shore manufacturing jobs in the United States and “buy American.
