Dee Haslam and her two daughters had veto power over the Deshaun Watson trade, but never used it.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns owner Jimmy Haslam revealed Friday that he was advised to give Dee Haslam and his two daughters veto power over the Deshaun Watson trade in light of the 24 accusations by massage therapists of sexual misconduct.
After extensive discussions with Dee and his daughters Whitney and Cynthia, none of them exercised their veto powers. Whitney is part of the Haslam Sports Group that owns and operates the Browns and Columbus Crew. “No. Our daughters had some really incredible comments on it, but we were pretty thoughtful of giving them all of the information, as well,’’ she said. “I think that was just part of the process for our family is really just thinking about all of the details and what comes of it.
They were most concerned, Dee said, about the profound impact such a move could have on victims of sexual abuse. “Dee and I have been in our organization strong believers in diversity of color, gender and thought, and we will continue to promote that,’’ Jimmy said. “I can’t speak for Dee, but I know personally, this has raised my awareness on the issue of sexual abuse, and it’s something that we will pay a lot more attention to going forward.”“I think it’s important – we will both say this – for you to understand how seriously we took this whole process,’’ he said.
“It’s not like we were hiding anything; they just were not quite as involved,’’ he said. “Like I said, we had several long Sunday afternoon conversations with Andrew [Berry], Paul [DePodesta] and Kevin [Stefanski] in which they got to listen, they got to ask questions and they became educated on the situation.
