The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has been under scrutiny in recent years for his performance in the CBS broadcast booth.
After 14 years with the Cowboys, Romo replaced Phil Simms as Nantz’s longtime partner and lead NFL analyst on CBS in 2017. Romo agreed to his mega-extension with the network in 2020. Hisreported that CBS Sports executives tried to stage an intervention
to address Romo’s struggles. Nantz, executives including CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus and CBS’ lead NFL game producer, Jim Rikhoff, visited Romo’s home in Dallas, according to the report. It was in that preseason meeting, executives reportedly addressed the need for Romo to better mesh with Nantz. An issue the 63-year-old broadcaster didn’t think the duo had.“Tony is the best. He’s the absolute best. And he’s also one of my best friends. I love the guy. And when somebody starts questioning our chemistry, there’s an agenda there,” Nantz said. “There is nothing wrong with our chemistry.
While there is sure to be continued criticism for Romo, there’s plenty of time for the duo to find their stride next season before manning the booth together in 2024 for the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.
