Tributes paid to Air Force veteran who helped make first US spacewalk possible
Jim McDivitt, a US Air Force pilot and NASA veteran, best-known for flying in the pioneering Gemini and Apollo human spaceflight programs that led to the first manned Moon landing, has died at 93.
He then returned to the Air Force and was accepted into the Experimental Flight Test Pilot School, which meant he was primed for NASA's search for intrepid space travelers. As such, he joined America's first astronaut squad, dubbed the Mercury Seven. For his next job, he began training as a commander for a backup team in 1966 to support what would have been the first crewed Apollo mission, codenamed AS-204. But all scheduled crewed missions were temporarily cancelled when a cabin fire struck Apollo 1 during a launch rehearsal test and killed three onboard astronauts, Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee, in 1967.
McDivitt was later promoted to manager of the Apollo Spacecraft Program and oversaw missions 12 to 16, including Apollo 11 in 1969: the mission that put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Moon's surface, the first humans to set foot on the lunar regolith.
