As an artist, she seeks to reveal the inner workings of these entities with the goal of revealing how individuals are tied to them, and to each other.
She found that the U.S. Mint was the perfect agency related to all of these themes. Magid focuses on the most basic level of legal tender in its smallest denomination: pennies. They pass through millions of hands each day and metaphorically relate, starting early in 2020, to the passage of the virus from person to person.
Her first act was a type of social intervention. She acquired 120,000 newly minted 2020 pennies with the cooperation of the mint and had them disseminated through stores and bodegas in New York City. These are not ordinary pennies; she had each one inscribed on the edge with the words, “The body was already so fragile.
