The Jewish Community commemorated Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, with the “Reading of Names” program that began Wednesday night at Beth El Temple, 2637 N. Front St., Harrisburg. The program started with an opening service led by students from the Silver Academy and congregational Religious Schools, and followed by a vigil in which the names of those who perished during the Holocaust will be read continuously over a period of 24 hours.

The Reading of Names seeks to dignify the memories of victims of the Shoah by reading their names aloud. These victims were stripped of their names by their oppressors and tattooed with numbers. Through the public reading of the names of Holocaust victims, this program strives to restore a portion of their humanity and to retrieve them from the lost depths of anonymity.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
