Houston’s rookie shortstop struck his first major league hit and home run on Friday.

A Houston Astros ball cap and glove during the seventh inning of an MLB baseball game at Angel Stadium on Friday, April 8, 2022 in Anaheim.ANAHEIM, Calif. — Consider Jeremy Peña a certified major leaguer.

Twelve Astros teamed to collect eight hits in the interminable frame. Five fell for extra bases. Kyle Tucker took Jaime Barria deep for a three-run home run. Peña batted twice, providing a double in addition to his home run. Peña finished 3-for-5. He and Tucker spearheaded a 14-hit outburst that forced both managers to clear their benches by the eighth inning.

Detmers arrived a veteran of 20 ⅔ major league innings. The rookie represents hope for a franchise that fails to develop pitching. Baseball America ranked him the organization’s best prospect prior to the season. His debut nearly devolved into disaster. Detmers needed 24 more pitches to finish the first. He entered the outing already on a pitch count. This inefficiency torpedoed it. Detmers exited after 75 pitches. He threw only four innings.
