After a small Japanese lunar spacecraft attempted to land on the moon Tuesday, flight controllers on the ground lost and could not regain contact with the aircraft during the final minutes of its descent.
Engineers at mission control expected the aircraft to touchdown on Tuesday at 12:40 p.m. ET, which is Wednesday at 1:40 a.m. Japan Standard Time. As time passed while they were working to regain contact after an expected communications blackout, mission control assumed that the craft must have gotten lost or met an unfortunate end.
According to Hakamada, the team was able to gather data from the vehicle right up until the attempted landing and shared mission updates on its. One update included a recent picture of Earth behind the moon that was taken by the spacecraft as it traveled through lunar orbit, according to reports.
