an artist and Malcolm an architect. The glue that binds the quartet so strongly, however, is the emotionally elusive lawyer Jude , about whose mysterious past the friends know nothing.
This sinuous adaptation by van Hove, Yanagihara and Koen Tachelet blends the forward momentum of Jude’s seemingly unstoppable self-destruction with scenes from his traumatic past. Norton, wearing a white shirt that is increasingly drenched with blood, makes Jude a fascinating combination of empty vessel – he learned as a child that the path of least resistance was to satisfy the desire of others – and damaged man beset by shame and guilt. The deepening intimacy between him and Willem is tender but painful, as Jude’s layers of self-protection are stripped away.
