, she jumped at the opportunity not only to reteam with filmmaker James Gunn, but also to delve into a story requiring creature effects of all kinds.
“Doing creatures is my favorite thing to do,” says Paterson, “and to have a creature that’s really part of the team [at the center of the story], I really looked forward to those interactions and the possibilities for comedy and acting within that.” The HBO Max series created, written, directed and exec produced by Gunn follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of Gunn’s 2021 film—a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.
The project marked Gunn and Paterson’s third together, on the heels of Warner Bros.’ 2002 live-action—both of which Gunn wrote. And certainly, it had its fair share of creatures to work with, between Peacemaker’s sidekick Eagly, a homicidal gorilla named Charlie, the gigantic monster referred to as the Cow and the parasitic aliens known as the butterflies.
Paterson recently joined Gunn for a conversation as part of Deadline’s video series The Process, during which she breaks down her work on all of the above, and divulges the secrets of getting feature-level effects into a TV series.
