Actor James Caan, known for his rules in 'The Godfather,' 'Brian's Song,' 'Elf' and more, died Wednesday, his family announced.
James Caan, the accomplished actor best known for playing Sonny Corleone in “The Godfather,” has passed away.through his official account that he passed away Wednesday. “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the tweet said. “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
He would also appear in Howard Hawks films like “Red Line 7000″ and “El Dorado.” He later starred in Robert Altman’s scond film “Countdown” in 1968. He first worked with Francis Ford Coppola on “The Rain People,” in which he played a brain-damaged football player. It would open the door for other opportunities like 1975′s “Funny Lady” opposite Barbra Streisand, the sci-fi sports thriller “Rollerball” and Sam Peckinpah’s The Killer Elite.”
Caan also famously rejected what would become notable film roles in hits like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Superman.”
