James Bulger was tortured and murdered by two 10-year-old boys in a crime that shook Merseyside back in February 1993.
James’ mum Denise was at the counter of A.R. Tyms’ butchers in the Strand shopping centre on February 12, 1993, when she briefly let go of her son’s hand. When she turned around moments later, he was gone. In 2010, Maggie Atkinson, then children’s commissioner for England, called for the age of criminal responsibility to be raised to 12 in light of the trial. She said: “The age of criminal responsibility in this country is 10 – that’s too low. It should certainly be moved up to 12, in some European countries it is 14.
A police officer remembered Venables being so small that his legs didn’t touch the floor as he sat in the custody office after his arrest. The base of the dock floor at Preston Crown Court had to be raised 18 inches so each boy could see over it.
