It's been 10 years since Jordan Davis was killed over loud music. In that time, his father has been searching for meaning and finding it in community. 'He meant more to me alive, but to the world, they didn't know him, and now they do, in death.'
That gets back to the meaning that he's trying to find in his son's death.
"All mothers and fathers, when they lose their children, they want something where they can put a finger on: Why did this happen? We want to know why, and we want to know is there something good that's going to come out of it?" It's clear to him that the answer is yes. By the reactions he's seen in Jacksonville, and in communities far from there, he says he now knows this:"I have been able to understand why my son's life on earth was taken and why he means more in death — to the community, and to the world at large — than he did while he was alive. He meant more to me alive, but to the world, they didn't know him, and now they do, in death.
The shooting received national attention, as Davis' death came just nine months after George Zimmerman fatally shot 17-year-old Black student Trayvon Martin in Sanford, north of Orlando.and also found guilty of three counts of attempted second-degree murder and shooting into a vehicle. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 90 extra years since the other teens were in the vehicle with Davis when he shot at them.
"That helped me go through what I was going through," Davis said of the verdict,"to know that he'll never be on the street to harm someone else's child."An editorial:
