Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has shown how tough it's going to be for Jack Grealish this season.
Fortunes in football are often fleeting and you can fall from the mountain's peak before you've even had a chance to take in the view. Jack Grealish hasn't exactly plummeted over a cliff face but the fragile edge is starting to crumble beneath his feet.
His position in the starting XI had been insecure during the first half of the season, despite an improvement in performances, but from January he became undroppable. Grealish would start 15 league matches in succession, as well as several Champions League knock-out ties, and was crucial in helping claw in Arsenal to retain the title.
The explosive winger has become an immediate fan favourite thanks to his daring runs, lightning pace and thrilling skills. With two nice goals to his name already helping as well. Guardiola has been surprised at how well he's playing so soon after joining the club. But what Doku does do is give Grealish more direct competition and minutes are naturally going to be harder to come by as a result. Grealish hasn't exactly had a bad start to the campaign but he hasn't been at his best even before an injury disruption. As Guardiola said ahead of his return, whoever is playing the best will get the left-wing slot.
That was a challenge to Grealish, making it clear he won't get his place back just because of his achievements last season. This past week has made it perfectly clear how hard that challenge will be.
