📻 'It's nature's cycle': Scott Mills' Radio 1 to Radio 2 graduation, by the DJs who've done it
It is widely seen as radio presenting’s equivalent of becoming a property owner. Or buying an electric blanket. Or taking up gardening. It is a sign as big and as unmistakable as Broadcasting House: you are now an adult.in the face. On Monday, Mills completes the rite of passage that is moving from Radio 1 to Radio 2. After 24 years, his Radio 1 days are behind him as he succeeds Steve Wright on the weekday afternoon show.
Listeners who are wondering what might be about to land on them will have been reassured by Mills’s choices in the “Tracks of My Years” slot on Ken Bruce’s show this week .
And while Mills is about to double his listenership – from seven million to 14 million – there is a sense that life might become a bit easier for him. “The pressure on Radio 1 to maintain its youth audience is relentless,” the colleague says. “It’s all about what’s new, and that’s changing at a bewildering rate. Radio 2 works on the principle that there are 500 great records, and they all come round in a circle.
