Ahead of the decision, County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer and Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre held a rally for the move, stressing the worsening effects of climate change.

Under its new rates, the county’s biggest CCA says its customers will pay almost $2 less per month compared to SDG&E customers.

Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre, with Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer at right, speaks at a rally to demand the San Diego Community Power Board of Directors commits to achieving 100 percent renewable power within the next 12 years at the County Operations Center in San Diego, CA on Thursday, March 23, 2023.

“We’re going to have binding benchmarks, we’re going to have accountability, we’re going to have transparency — so that we can make sure that we’re on track to meeting these goals that we put out, so that they’re not just aspirations” Lawson-Remer said. The ‘decarbonization playbook’ offers a menu of options for cutting climate pollution in San Diego County.

Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 569 demonstrated in support, saying a transition to clean energy would generate well-paid jobs for its union members and other trade workers.
