Voter anger stemming from the 2020 presidential election — especially in counties where Donald Trump won — has worn down elections officials.
In Coconino County, Recorder Patty Hansen has already decided she won't seek reelection to a fourth term in 2024. She might not last even that long.
While she said threats and harassment in Coconino County aren't"any more than the usual," Hansen is particularly upset at Hoffman's treatment in nearby Yavapai County. “I think we all face a lot of verbal harassment and angry voters," she said."I take it as just part of the job.” "There's normal crazy," said Lisa Marra, elections director in Cochise County. And then there's this year.On Friday, she dealt with a voter angry that the candidates on his ballot are not listed in alphabetical order. Marra explained that names are rotated, as required by law, but the voter would have none of it.
It's good to have a healthy skepticism, said Marra, a Republican who has served as elections director since 2017.Can trust in elections be restored? All say they promote transparency, welcome tours of their offices, and invite people to get involved in the election process, whether as poll workers, observers or even applying for one of the many vacancies in their offices.
