The Chicago Fire moved to the burbs in 2006 but it looks like the team is heading back to Chicago. The Fire and the village of Bridgeview have agreed to a memo of understanding that will see the MLS team pay over $60M to break the lease. What seemed to be a progressive move in '06 was anything but.
In the short-term at least, it sounds like the Fire will be heading back to Soldier Field, the team's home when it entered MLS in 1998 as an expansion franchise.
Since 2006, the Chicago Fire has only exceeded its 2005 average attendance once, in 2017, and it was driven by the signing of German international Bastian Schweinsteiger. Even then the average crowd was only 150 more. Assuming that the deal does go through, the Fire's owners appear to have one of two decisions to make - a permanent tenancy at Soldier Field or building its own soccer-specific stadium in Chicago to 2020 standards.
