The reforms would also grant politicians more power to select judges by giving the government a majority of seats on the committee that makes appointments. Critics argue this would lead to politicised appointments of judges favourable to the government agenda.that would limit the attorney general’s power to declare a sitting prime minister unfit for office, which strengthens Mr Netanyahu’s position as he fights corruption charges.
Organisers described protests on 12 March, the 10th week of the movement, as the largest in Israel’s history with estimates of more than 500,000 taking to the streets. The movement has since won the support of Israel’s trade union confederation, Histadrut, which has wielded its influence to shut down the country’s main international airport, as well as seaports, hospitals, and universities.
