🎧 Listen: In today's episode of The Journal podcast, KellyCrowWSJ explains how AI may help crack the decades-long mystery of a painting found in an antique shop

This transcript was prepared by a transcription service. This version may not be in its final form and may be updated.Kelly: They're bouncing around the English countryside. Tony was an amateur artist and a furniture designer, and so he always liked rummaging around antique shops.Kelly: So they find themselves in this little antique shop. He's looking behind things and looking around things, and anyway, he finds this armoire, but he actually was more curious about what was behind it.

Kelly: I think what their story shows is just how many loops they have to go through, how many people they have to appeal to, ultimately how subjective it is, to try to get something authenticated. Ari Cohen: I had no relationship with art. I was a 22-year-old kid who knew nothing about art. I couldn't tell you the difference between Michelangelo and Van Gogh, and knew absolutely nothing.Ari Cohen: We have a little industrial complex, and he was one of our tenants.

Kelly: I think it just started off as kind of a fun parlor game among friends. "Hey, let's just see if we can do this, and maybe we've hit the lottery. Maybe there's a payoff." Kelly: He had one solid lead. The antique shop owner had told him that he had gotten the picture by way of a convent in Kentucky. It was run by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. And so Tony went there. He flew to Kentucky the summer after he got the work, and he met with the sisters there, and he said, "What can you tell me about this picture?" And they confirmed a huge great tale.

Kelly: He invites Larry Silver over to his house, sets it up on an easel, and Larry took a look, and Larry said he was impressed. He was impressed by the delicate warm nature of Mary's face, and he was impressed with the fact that it was painted on wood, that the wood looked old. And so when Larry came in and said, "Wow, I don't know exactly what you've got, but these are Raphael faces.

Ryan: Today there are around 40 investors who have a stake in the painting. Together, they've invested more than half a million dollars trying to prove it's a Raphael. And then last year, Ayers died. When Tony passed away, how did that affect the quest that you were all on? Ryan: Art Recognition build algorithms that can identify patterns in artists' brush strokes in order to assess whether a painting is real or fake. Has Art Recognition had any proven successes with other art?
