It is studded with radar systems which provide aerial surveillance of central Europe. In 2012 Kaliningrad is roughly the size of Northern Ireland . The port was founded in 1255 by the Teutonic Knights, a Christian military order. As Königsberg, East Prussia’s commercial capital, it flourished for centuries. It produced the philosophers Immanuel Kant and Hannah Arendt, andHoffmann, the author of “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. At the end of the second world war, Germany lost the territory to the Soviet Union.
