In the 2013 action film 2 Guns, Mark Wahlberg's character shoots the heads off of chickens. Is the scene real, or is it just movie magic?
In Baltasar Kormákur's 2 Guns there is a violent chicken shooting scene that has made audiences long wonder if it was actually real. The action film stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as undercover DEA agent Bobby Trench and undercover Navy intelligence officer Marcus Stigman. As one might expect, the movie is packed with high-action scenes and plenty of shooting, which doesn't necessarily mesh with animals on set.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an early 2 Guns scene, Bobby meets Mexican drug lord Manny "Papi" Greco to retrieve cocaine from him so that the DEA can convict him. The interaction happens at Papi's farm in front of his bull, who is clearly being used to intimidate Bobby when Papi doesn't give him the drugs he's looking for. Later, Papi captures Bobby and Marcus at his farm, hangs them upside down on a fence, and unleashes his bull.
How 2 Guns' Chicken Scene Was Actually Filmed The 2 Guns chicken shooting film was done in a way that kept all the chickens safe. According to Humane Hollywood, the American Humane Association was on set monitoring all the animal sequences in the film. For the chicken scene, the film's art director constructed boxes for the chickens to safely be placed in before being buried underground. The boxes the 2 Guns art director made were approved by the AHA for comfort and temperature.
Hollywood may do a lot of crazy things for entertainment, but harming animals in films is not one of them. It would certainly not look good for 2 Guns or any of the actors if they had actually killed chickens for a movie scene. Luckily, they took the proper precautions for not only the chicken scene but all animal scenes, including the bull scene. 2 Guns fans can sleep easy knowing that no chickens were harmed in the making of the film.
