Iran, UN nuclear watchdog agree to resolve issues crucial to reviving the country’s 2015 nuclear accord with world powers but Russian demands may delay it as Moscow links talks with Ukraine sanctions

International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi has met on Saturday with Iranian officials as talks in Vienna over Tehran's tattered atomic deal with world powers appear to be reaching their end.

It envisions the IAEA reaching conclusions on the discovery of uranium particles at former undeclared sites in Iran by June. The move is separate from the talks over the nuclear deal but could help push them to a conclusion. Within two weeks, the IAEA will review that information and submit any questions, and within a week of that the two agencies will meet in Tehran to address the questions.

“The safeguards issues will not be resolved politically because I will not go for that,” Grossi said. But a 2018 decision by then-President Donald Trump to unilaterally withdraw America from the agreement sparked years of tensions and attacks across the wider Mideast.Today, Tehran enriches uranium up to 60 percent purity — its highest level ever and a short technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90 percent and far greater than the nuclear deal’s 3.67 percent cap.

In Vienna, negotiators appear to be signaling a deal is near, even as Russia's war in Ukraine rages on. Russian Ambassador Mikhail Ulyanov has been a key mediator in the talks and tweeted Thursday that negotiations were “almost over.” That was also acknowledged by French negotiator Philippe Errera.

UN atomic watchdog: Iran further raising nuclear stockpileUN atomic watchdog: Iran further raising nuclear stockpileThe United Nations’ atomic watchdog said Thursday that it believes Iran has significantly increased its stockpile of highly enriched uranium in breach of a 2015 accord with world powers. The International Atomic Energy Agency told member nations in its confidential quarterly report that Iran has an estimated 33.2 kilograms (73.1 pounds) of uranium enriched to up to 60% fissile purity, an increase of 15.5 kilograms since November. Such highly enriched uranium can be easily refined to make atomic weapons, which is why world powers have sought to contain Tehran’s nuclear program.
