This journalism thing has been a long, strange trip.
“Newspapers,” they called them. And they contained everything we thought you wanted and a lot you didn’t. Like the internet, but with ink stains. And without the porn or insults or pop-ups.I did everything there was to do in that business. I was a copy editor in college, a community reporter at the Birmingham News, a cop reporter and a city hall reporter, an investigative reporter, a data reporter and editor. I became a columnist, and thought that was how the story would end.
But the world has changed. The business has changed. We can talk about why on another day. The short answer is business models and reader habits changed, too. But as a result people like me began to rely on social media to reach our most loyal and interested and connected readers.
