Instagram is planning to sharply curtail its shopping features, according to a new report.
Citing an internal memo, The Information reported Tuesday that the Meta Platforms Inc. META, -1.11% social network will shift its e-commerce priorities toward projects that directly drive advertising. Staff were reportedly told about the move Tuesday, and that Instagram’s current Shopping page would eventually be phased out.
The report said that while Instagram would not drop shopping features entirely, it plans to test a new, simpler, less personalized version of its shopping page. Instagram launched its shopping feature for regular posts in 2017, and expanded it in 2018 in an attempt to better monetize the popular Stories feature.
Last week, The Verge reported Meta is looking into adding more paid features to its Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms, in an effort to make up for shrinking ad revenue.
