Special report from our Liverpool FC correspondent Paul Gorst on how the Reds sealed the signing of long-term transfer target Ryan Gravenberch on deadline day

It's nearly three years since Jurgen Klopp was first given a glimpse into the potential of Ryan Gravenberch.

READ MORE: Mohamed Salah Q&A - Ask LFC correspondent Paul Gorst your questions on the ongoing transfer saga The club's failure to adequately plan for the future, particularly when it comes to midfielders, has been criticised with the benefit of hindsight, and Bayern's deal of £15m with Ajax in June 2022 was one that could have been challenged at the time, looking back.

The representative of the Netherlands international likely had few positive details to report back after that dour stalemate kept the two Premier League giants in eighth and 10th, but the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann in Munich, in March, was a key development. Nagelsmann's replacement at Bayern, Thomas Tuchel, did just about enough to steady the ship toward another Bundesliga title on the final day of the season, but Gravenberch was not given any real new opportunities after the late March arrival of the new coach.

Despite Gravenberch being included in Bayern's first three matches of the season prior to his move, his campaign has so far amounted to a nine-minute cameo as a substitute in a comprehensive victory over Augsburg. It was his 34th and final appearance for the German champions, whose best-of-luck message upon his move to Liverpool did not veil the fact he was a bit-part player at the Allianz Arena.

It brought an end to a saga that had quietly hummed along in the background all summer. Gravenberch now has the chance to build on that early promise shown at Ajax under a manager whose track record of developing and trusting younger players is exceptional.
