When sianushka went undercover at a pro-life conference, she found a toxic mix of disinformation and QAnon-style conspiracy theories
There were stalls dotted around the room, one run by Christian Concern, the anti-abortion organisation which lobbied the Government to reduce theto 20 weeks, and has historical ties to Conservative MP Nadine Dorries. The man behind the stand was younger than me, and personable. As he chattered away, I became distracted by the small plastic blobs scattered on tables: mini-foetuses to wave at women attending abortion clinics.
During the first session we were shown graphic videos of surgical abortions at different stages of pregnancy. While people around me grasped and muttered, all I could think of was whether the owner of the vulva on screen consented to having her body shown in this way. I also noticed how during the first talk, references to Brexit and the climate crisis were met with typically hard-right responses – jeering at Extinction Rebellion for example.
By arguing that abortions are Satanic sacrifices, the movement is provided with justification for hosting prayer vigils outside clinics: praying, Wong informed us, can stop Satan’s power from working, disrupting the abortion and saving the foetus’ life. The attendees were encouraged to think about the possibility of ending abortion access in the UK – not as an idealised fiction but a target for the next five years.
