New Hem Kitchen & Bar opens in Houston's Asiatown with inspiration from Vietnamese street-side cafes
, a buzzy new Vietnamese restaurant and bar in Asiatown, is reminiscent of the street-side cafes in Vietnam. Colorful child-sized plastic chairs and tables are arranged next to a tiled-in area, where bright yellow framed windows open to reveal the bar inside.
The first restaurant project for operating partners and longtime Houstonians Steven Le and Kanny Diep — both veterans of the Houston DJ circuit with more than 10 years working various area nightclubs and restaurants — the partners wanted to capture the spirit of the alley street food culture in Vietnam. Nailing the ambiance was critical.
In the back of the room, a hand-painted mural depicts a Vietnamese road with motorbikes driving in the middle lane flanked by colorful buildings, while an accent wall is painted to resemble a dilapidated brick building bearing vintage signs inscribed with words like “Bia hơi” . Le says that the recipes tend to lean sweet because the current Vietnamese palate tends to be more sweet. He added that those who travel frequently to Vietnam love it.
