The United Nations' report was released on World Population Day.
"India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country during 2023," the U.N. says.
In a statement, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres talks of a "shared responsibility to care for our planet." The report, from the population division of the U.N.'s Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said China and India were each home to over 1.4 billion people in 2022.
