STUDY: More than 40% of people with type 2 diabetes under 40 also live with depression.
People who develop type 2 diabetes before age 40 have an increased – and increasing – risk of co-morbid depression, according to a retrospective study of almost 1.4 million people with T2D in the UK and US. The study is "the first to examine population-level trends in the prevalence of depression at the time of T2D diagnosis", said the researchers, from the University of Melbourne in Australia.
While levels of cardiometabolic comorbidities were highest in those aged 70-79 years in both the UK and US, the level of elevated risk attached to younger age at diagnosis varied, after adjustment for confounding factors, according to the presence or absence of cardiometabolic co-morbidities. The authors of the new study said: "The risk of depression at the time of diabetes diagnosis is increasing rapidly across all age groups, particularly in those under 40." Those diagnosed at young ages "are far more likely to experience depression than those who develop T2D later in life", and the risk "applies regardless of whether or not they have other underlying illnesses".
"Proactive management of coexisting depression through timely screening, early diagnosis and drug treatment may lead to improved blood sugar control in people with diabetes, delayed onset of complications, and ultimately lower healthcare costs."
