Surrounded by a towering mountain range on one side and the glittering waters of the Caribbean Sea on the other lies a small coastal town called Choroní. Deep in the state of Aragua, Venezuela, the only way to get there is by crossing through a sprawling tropical forest, the Henri Pittier National Park.
Choroní has a long-standing network of hotels and inns serving international tourists. Some come for its beaches and famous good food, others to rest after visiting the Henri Pittier National Park, a bird watcher’s paradise that is home to one of the highest concentrations of different species in the world.In 2020, halfway through building a house for her family of four to live in—and without the income to finish it—Yessica Díaz, 38, picked up a rod for the first time.
As we speak, Dariana’s voice fights with the sound of the waves smashing against the dock and some salsa playing in the background. Or maybe it’s reggaeton? Next to her is her seven-year-old boy, the youngest of three.
