Somerville artist Valerie Imparato explores themes of motherhood, loss and joy in her newest mixed-media exhibit that follows her story from her miscarriage in 2020 to the birth of her daughter Zoe.
In the mini-series"I was pregnant and now I'm not," artist Valerie Imparato documents her miscarriage. On the left, the artist looks directly at the viewer, surrounded by darkness. On the left, a triptych showcases her ultrasounds, from when she found out she was pregnant to her miscarriage weeks later.
After spending time processing her miscarriage in a “dark room under a blanket,” Imparato felt like she needed to archive her experiences in some way. Her first mini-series “I was pregnant, and now I’m not” is a “reflection of what I was like for weeks,” she says. “I just wanted to be a shell, I wanted to be alone.”
On the left is "Am I glowing yet," featuring artist Valerie Imparato looking skeptically into a mirror. On the right, "The Container" shows a more abstract portrait of the artist.
