Members of Belfast's Islamic community came together today to mark Eid al-Fitr.
The festival marks the end of Ramadan, a month when Muslims abstain from eating or drinking between dawn and sunset, and is also known as 'festival of breaking the fast'. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwal, which is the tenth month of the Islamic calendar and starts with the sighting of the new moon.Since Muslims use a lunar calendar, the Gregorian date of Eid al-Fitr changes yearly, with Eid being eleven days earlier each year.
Members of the Islamic community gathered at Iqraa Mosque in Dunmurry for prayers, family fun and a communal feast to mark the occasion. Iqraa Mosque has been housed in the former Dunmurry Presbyterian Church since 2018 and had originally been established as a school in South Belfast to teach Arabic and Islamic education to children in the Muslim community.
