Translated into more than 300 languages, “Stille Nacht” was written in 1818. One of the world’s most celebrated Christmas carols, “Silent Night! Holy Night!” is inscribed onlist of Intangible Cultural Heritage in recognition of its promotion of peace and cultural unity. The following day I set out for the sleepy Tyrolean hamlet of Arnsdorf, a 30-minute train ride from Salzburg. Silent Night museums – including one in the salt mine city of Hallein, and another in the alpine resort of Wagrain – have proliferated in Salzburgerland since the song turned 200 in 2018. But Arnsdorf’s version is – or so I was told – the original. “You have to understand, it was all because of the mice,” Max Gurtner said as he ushered me into the Silent Night Heritage Museum.
Housed in the old parsonage – with original creaking floorboards – where Joseph Mohr lived from 1817 to 1819, the museum, which is packed with “Silent Night” memorabilia, even has a karaoke station where visitors can croon their own version of the carol.
