Shuida Zhang was prosecuted after council inspectors found horrific conditions at his business
A shop owner ended up in court after inspectors found a dead bird and the remains of a rat in the storeroom of a supermarket. They also found masses of rat droppings, dead flies and maggots at the Shunfa Supermarket.
It led Shuifa Zhang, 54, to face Swansea Magistrates' Court, where he admitted six food hygiene offences in relation to the state of his business in the city. The court was shown pictures of the conditions, in particular in a lean-to extension that was used as a storeroom. The dead rat was found close to food stock and the bird was under a table, reports WalesOnline.
Inspectors also found an open tank of crustaceans, with a rusty utensil used to scoop up crabs. Dirty, soaked newspapers were kept in a container with crayfish, and there were also crayfish loose in a walk-in chiller. Pests could exploit holes in the floor and other large openings, while one image showed a chewed rubbish bag. An old ripped duvet hung on a washing line in the store room.
Environmental health officers visited in August last year and concluded the shop "posed an imminent risk to public health". Zhang agreed to an immediate voluntary closure so the failings could be addressed. He was issued notices requiring him to complete work to make the shop safe but he breached them, prompting the council to prosecute him. He was ordered to pay £2,400 in fines, £2,640 in prosecution costs and a victim services surcharge of £960.
Councillor David Hopkins, cabinet member for corporate services, said: “The conditions witnessed by our environmental health officers raised significant concerns for public health and thankfully, the shop closed immediately so we could protect customers against serious risks to their health. It’s completely unacceptable for owners of food-related businesses to operate in this manner.
