Since 1999, the United States government has included certain limitations for those seeking to obtain permanent residence in the country. The “public charge” rule was created, denying migratory benefits to those who would depend on the U.S. government after gaining immigrant status, especially those requiring Supplemental Security Income or long-term institutionalized care.

“People told me that if I was receiving stamps, I couldn’t do my taxes, or that I or my children would be charged for them later when they grew up,” Paz said. “So I decided it was better to not receive stamps even though we needed them because my children are starting to eat solid foods.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, this rule had an impact on those directly or indirectly affected by the coronavirus.When the pandemic hit and thousands of businesses across the country closed their doors, María Klein got sick with COVID-19 and suddenly found herself without a job and unable to ask for any kind of help.

With two teenage children being at home all day, increasing their food consumption, Klein had to rely on her husband, who did not lose his job. Their household finances had to be reorganized during the time she was unable to work. Klein is back on a normal work schedule and is also studying forensic science at North Central Texas College.

During the previous administration, Chavarría explained, those who requested a status change in the country were asked for“And if on top of that, requesting aid was added, the case got complicated,” Chavarría said.
