Ilia Gruev has found opportunities hard to come by since joining Daniel Farke's Leeds United over the summer

Ilia Gruev hasn’t been given the chance to make his mark at Leeds United just yet. The midfielder joined Leeds on the penultimate day of the summer transfer window as Daniel Farke made moves to bolster his squad with established options in the middle of the park.

It’s understandable, too, given the form of those currently ahead of him in the pecking order, with Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara and Archie Gray all shining brightly in central midfield. But, the gruelling nature of the Championship makes it clear that Gruev’s time will come eventually and he must do all he can to be ready for it.

Farke, then, will be pleased to see him link up with Bulgaria this week with Gruev having the opportunity to get 180 valuable minutes under his belt. The Bulgarians have a mountain to overcome if they’re to progress through their qualifying group and seal a spot in Euro 2024, as they find themselves eight points behind the pace with just three games left to play.

Gruev will also be looking to be involved in Bulgaria’s next game on Tuesday as they travel to Tirana to take on Albania in a friendly. He’ll be keen to impress in both games but the minutes on offer will help to keep him ticking over as the Championship schedule takes a chaotic turn.
